October 2005 The Shoreline Page 3 Town of Pine Knoll Shores Board of Commissioners Front Row: Grandson Scott Rathbone, Mayor Joan Lamson, Granddaughter Lindsay McBride. Back Row: Grandson Allen Rathbone, Granddaughter Lauren MacBride and friend Erin. Our Day Trip To North Carolina By Lindsay McBride It took five long hours of endless driving but once I stepped out of the car and smelled the ocean breeze I knew it was worth it. My sister, Lauren, my mom, Betsy, and I had spent all morning driving just to spend two days and one night at our heavenly get away in North Carolina. Our grandma (Joan Lamson) who is mayor of Pine Knoll Shores has a cozy little beach house that is located right on the beach in Emerald Isle. When we got there I immediately went to the beach. I had been longing to feel that beautiful sun on my pale skin. I would only be there for five minutes but I would take anything I could get before my mom called me in to unpack. After I laid down on the warm sand for three minutes or so, I got up and headed back to the car. I grabbed my duffle bag and ran for the front door. There are two different sides to the beach house, as is true on many of the other beach houses. In this house one side was called Red Fish and the other, Blue Fish. We were staying in Blue Fish. The house, while not the biggest, is very nice and cozy. It has one master room with a queen size bed and an ocean view. Another room has two double beds and a bathroom. Then there is another bathroom, and a living room. The living room is directly attached to the kitchen/breakfast nook. In the living room there is a door leading to the deck, which goes out to the beach. I dropped my stuff on one of the double beds Joan E. Lamson, Mayor Finance & Administration 240-3110 William B. I grabbed my bathing suit and threw it on. After we had put on sunscreen and grabbed towels, books and sunglasses, we were off. We set up two towels and my mom and I ran to the water. My sister read her book for about 30 minutes and then fell asleep. It wasn’t until about 5:00 p.m. that she woke up, and realized how burned she had gotten on her thighs. It was then that we decided to head in. My mom made us some dinner and then we all hit the hay. When we woke up my mom decided to call my grandma to see if we could spend the day with her. She answered on the second ring and was more than happy to spend time with us. My mom drove us to her house and when we got there she welcomed us with a smile and lots of hugs. She took us to the new firehouse that was just built. She led us around and we got to meet all the interesting and amazing firemen. After the incredibly fun tour of the firehouse our grandma showed us around Town Hall. That was our favorite tour. She showed us her office and we posed for a picture behind her desk. When all the tours were over we went back to her house and had a delicious lunch. Then we all said our good byes had a few hugs and we were on our way. When we got back to the beach house my mom grabbed the digital camera and placed it on the deck so that it would take a picture of us without having to press the button. The picture was taken and it is one of my favorite North Carolina pictures. The Pine Knoll Shores Democrat Party Precinct will next meet at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening October 10 at PKS Town Hall to review the party’s recent meetings and update the precinct on countywide issues. We have also invited the Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, Salter Path, and Cedar Point Precincts to join us. Light refreshments will be served. The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina has prompted many of us to donate money, time, and even our homes to assist our fellow man in New Orleans and the gulf coast. To that end, there will be a benefit fund raiser and Pig Pickin’ held on October 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims at The Carteret County Home on Hwy 101 in Beaufort. Please plan on attending and make a donation. Tickets are $20. While we can agree to disagree on a number of issues, education and the decaying conditions of our schools are critical issues to the future of our county. Two school bond referendums will be on the November 2005 ballot and we encourage everyone to vote. We are concerned about a light voter turnout, please consider the importance of our children’s education and support these two bond referendums. On the evolving topic of land-use, PKS has long valued our beautiful environment and we need to pay attention to what changes are being put into place elsewhere in the county. You are encouraged to attend the Commissioner’s meeting and make your voice heard. Bill Henderson, former Chair of the Carteret County Democratic Party, is the new Chairman of the Board of Elections in Carteret County. Mr. Henderson replaces Mr. Ed Pond who recently retired from that position. The public is invited to attend their meetings. Please call the Board of Elections for details.
